Xubuntu Notes

Background

Xubuntu is a version of Ubuntu using the Xfce desktop, rather than Gnome or KDE. Xfce is smaller and faster, looks good, and has a full set of utilities.

Installation

With an external CD-ROM, you can install the .iso directly. Using a pendrive for the installation is another alternative.

    • useful if you have another Linux system with enough storage to download the .iso to set up the pendrive from
    • insert in Eee, hold escape during boot, select pendrive as boot device
    • wired networking will work, wireless not verified
    • simple to then install from pendrive if desired
    • add after install to Eee
    • gets Xubuntu wireless and most hot keys working, while greatly speeding up boot time
      • fix if wireless toggle won't turn back on: edit /etc/acpi/eeepc-wireless-toggle.sh and add a second “echo 1 > $wlan_control” line after the first
      • to get sound keys working: add xfce4-mixer control to the panel, then right-click, choose properties, and select device #0: HDA Intel
  • if the second password prompt for wireless annoys you, install the libpam-gnome-keyring package - but it may not work perfectly
