Installing Microsoft Windows Server 2003 {r2} on an Eee PC 701 4G

Information

Users have reported that you can install this the usual way via USB CD/DVD ROM drive but for some of us, we either don't have one or don't care to own one, so we fire up a bootable USB drive with the Win2k3 image on it. I tried doing this with USB_Multiboot10 and while everything copied over, I wasn't getting anywhere due to this error:

“Value 0 on the line in section [sourcedisksfiles] with key “binifix4.cmd. Setup cannot continue. to quit setup, press f3.”

The Eeeuser forum didn't have a valid solution (for me and probably others) when it came to booting with a USB drive. Solution provided.

Basic installation method

Pre-requisites for an easy install:

  • A legal copy of Windows Server 2003 Std/Enterprise
  • An external USB2 CD/DVD reader OR at least a 1GB flash drive. SD Cards work too.
  • Optional: nLite to reduce the size of the Windows installation.

Installation Process

CD/DVD ROM method

Well, with the CD/DVD ROM method, it's a piece of cake. Typical installation scenario from the CD.

USB_Multiboot10 method

  • Have your installation files ready
  • Run USB_Multiboot10, format your flash/USB disk
  • Select your Win2k3 source, select the target USB drive and continue with building your bootable USB drive
  • If you ran nLite it might ask you to do some additional stuff
  • After the USB drive has been made bootable and USB_Multiboot10 has finished, open TXTSETUP.SIF on the USB drive you just made
  • Find the section called [SourceDisksFiles] and find the following lines:

binifix4.cmd = 100,,,,,,_x,2,0,0
undoren.cmd = 100,,,,,,_x,2,0,0
ren_fold.cmd = 100,,,,,,_x,2,0,0

  • and change them to this:

binifix4.cmd = 1,,,,,,_x,2,0,0
undoren.cmd = 1,,,,,,_x,2,0,0
ren_fold.cmd = 1,,,,,,_x,2,0,0

  • Save the file
  • Reboot your system, boot from USB drive
  • Setup will load and actually let you continue.

Hope this helps as it helped me.

Installing Driver

  • Asus Easy Installation Driver Executables(like AsusSetup.exe) prevents installation against Windows Server 2003, but most driver has setup.exe that enable install it on Windows Server 2003.
  • ACPI: run setup.exe, InstallEee.exe
  • ASUS Fix: run AsusFix.exe (it works well in windows 2003)
    • Anybody knows what it's operation is?
  • AsusUpdate_071211: I didn't try it yet.
  • Intel 910gml Chipset Driver: run Setup.exe
  • Lan card: run Attansic\Setup.exe
  • Sound: run Setup.exe and you should update High Definition Audio Driver from Microsoft Windows Update.
  • Touchpad: run Setup.exe
  • Vga: Open your Device Mangaer and update driver by right-clicking the vga device, and Select Driver from ”{vga driver directory}/Graphics”.
  • Wireless: run {wireless driver directory}/Install_CD/Setup.exe.
  • Webcam/Voice Recorder: automatically works well in Microsfot MSN Live Messenger.

Personal Installation Experience

Using Application

Microsoft MSN Live Messenger

  • If you install it with original form, you may see only 3-4 contacts at once. You can use mess patch to msn live messenger.
