Restore computers with Pre-installed Windows XP from USB

EeePCs preinstalled with Windows may be easily restored with a USB DVD-ROM drive. This guide will give instructions on how to restore using the restore DVD if you do not have a USB-DVD ROM drive. Restoring using this method will erase any and all data and partitions from your drive, including any other operating systems you may have installed.

What you will require:

  1. Another Windows PC with a DVD drive
  2. A USB flash drive. 4GB? or more.
  3. Free hard drive space.

This guide is based on the thread http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=56930 For assistance please look in there.

Creating bootable USB

  • Create a folder on your computer named WINPE
  • Extract WINPE.ISO from the root of your recovery cd to your WINPE folder using Winrar, 7-Zip, Winzip, etc.
  • After all files have copied over, navigate to WINPE\I386\SYSTEM32 (on your desktop WINPE folder) and open the file WINPESHL.INI with notepad.

change

[launchApp]
AppPath=x:\EPCRecover.exe

to

[launchApp]
AppPath=x:\GHOST32.EXE

and then save changes

  • Connect the flash drive you wish to use. Remove all other USB drives including hard drives and SD cards.
  • Open PeToUSB and select the following… USB Removable, Enable Disk Format and Enable File Copy. Also select the file path to your WINPE folder on your desktop, then click start

Warning, all data on your USB drive will be erased. Confirm that you have selected the correct drive.

  • After everything is done navigate to your recovery folder in the root of your original cd and copy “EEEPC-ENG.GHO” over to the root of your flash drive.
  • Finally your ready to install.
  • Just a note, if you want to wait until after you ran PeToUSB, you can edit the WINPESHL.INI file. It is in the X:\I386\SYSTEM32\ folder on your flash drive.

Booting from USB

  • Insert your thumbdrive into your eee pc, power up, hit escape and select to boot from your flash drive.
  • Once loaded, Symantec ghost will pop up stating CD/DVD writing functionality is currently unavailable blah, blah, blah. Just hit OK and then select “local, disk, from image” then navigate back 2 folders to select your “EEEPC-ENG.GHO” image.
  • Select your HDD (mines a 900HA so it says 152627 MB) hit OK.
  • Next it will show you the default partitions that the restore disc creates, just hit ok. The last question is “Proceed with disk restore?” hit yes.
  • After Ghost is done it will say “Clone completed successfully” choose reset computer and enjoy!
