If you are having trouble connecting to repositories, or trying to connect in Pidgin, this wiki might be able to help. For example, if you are trying to download amsn using the repository http://updates.xepc.org as instructed in the wiki at http://wiki.eeeuser.com/how_to_install_amsn_0.97
but you keep getting error messages such as:
http://update.eeepc.asus.com/p701/dists … lease.gpg: Could not connect to update.eeepc.asus.com:80 (22.214.171.124), connection timed out http://updates.xepc.org/dists/p701/Release.gpg: Could not connect to updates.xepc.org:80 (126.96.36.199), connection timed out http://update.eeepc.asus.com/p701/en/di … lease.gpg: Could not connect to update.eeepc.asus.com:80 (188.8.131.52), connection timed out
Obviously, this happens with other repositories too, including the asus ones.
The important thing is the (184.108.40.206). This is supposed to be your IP address, but some DNS Servers are making the eeepc subset to 220.127.116.11, which means you will not be able to reach the repositories. There is a really easy way to fix this, thanks to bardellowski on the eeeuser forums. Here we go:
sudo apt-get update
in terminal. Everything should work!
If you want to change back to your default DNS settings after downloading from the repositories, repeat the above steps 1 to 4, and then UNCHECK the box, then click okay.
If you want to update or dowload from the repositories again, just follow the steps above.
Following these steps also enables Pidgin to work, which wouldn't have been possible before.
