Uninstall Taiwanese Software

700 Series

You can save space (about 133-235MB when you updated after a factory restore) if you want to convert your Taiwanese Eee to an English one, and don't need the Taiwan programs anymore.

The files listed below are mainly language files!

In the console use the following commands:

Sudo Bash

apt-get remove acroread-cn-tw
apt-get remove asus-i18n-zh-tw
apt-get remove ...

The ellipsis above represents the programs listed below. Notice that the two complete example lines are the first two programs listed below.

Following programs can safely be removed:

  • acroread-cn-tw : 51.8Mb
  • asus-i18n-zh-tw: 50kb
  • firefox-locale-zh-tw: 528kb
  • kde-i18n-zhtw: 5.9Mb
  • libchewing3 (phonetic Chinese input method) : 500Kb
  • libchewing3-data : 9.4Mb
  • openoffice.org-help-zh-tw: 26.5Mb
  • openoffice.org-l10n-zh-tw: 7.1Mb
  • scim (Chinese input method): 9.9Mb (packages “scim-pinyin” & “scim-tables-zh” are included in this uninstall)
  • thunderbird-locale-zh-tw : 672kb
  • xlex (English Chinese dictionary): 21.6Mb
  • ttf-arphic-asus (Chinese fonts) : 24.9 Mb

Just make sure you DO NOT uninstall following program!!!:

  • libtext-wrapi18n-perl ← Do NOT Uninstall!!(If you don't want to mess up your Eee)

Additionally you may want to change the repositories, go here: Change Repositories from Taiwan to English.

900 Series

Generally follow the steps above. You won't find everything installed but it'll do.

Additionally you can uninstall:

  • gcin
  • gcin-qt3-immodule
  • xandros-gcin

(This is the CH/EN button on the panel that keeps kicking into Chinese when I'm emacs-ing around)

Using synaptic

To be sure to remove all chinese/taiwanese packages do in console:

sudo synaptic

then search in the name only everything containing:

-tw

then mark for complete removal all installed package. During this selection you could be prompted in case you like to remove a english package related to the marked taiwanese one: in those cases you should answer: cancel
