Enabling Compiz-fusion desktop

Have you been wanting the uber-cool rotating desktop cube? Have you been wanting wobbly windows? Well, it turns out you can have them. Even a stock out-of-the-box eee with 512 meg of ram and eeeXubuntu installed with no swap can run compiz-fusion, give you those things and not crawl. It's amazing but true, and it's pretty easy to do.

These instructions assume you have the EeeXubuntu Live CD or USB Stick and want to install to the SSD.

Note that installation without swap space is controversial. Xubuntu claim their Live CD - which runs without swap - requires only 128Mb of RAM. The same page recommends 256Mb of RAM for an installed system, presumably with swap. This suggests that swap is not necessary on a system with 512Mb RAM.

* eeeXubuntu is not a distribution. It is not a fork of Xubuntu specifically for the eee. Rather, it is a refinement on the Ubuntu install process for this CD-less form factor and hardware configuration.
 * Fixes, if possible, should be sent upstream
 * In a perfect world, eeeXubuntu wouldn't be needed.

Unfortunately, it seems like it is not possible to use an external screen unless it was plugged in at the point that X was last run. Therefore, either plug your screen in before you turn on your EEE, or plug it in then restart X by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.

eeeXubuntu is a custom version of the Xubuntu 7.10 Live CD with fully-integrated hardware support, including native wireless drivers, functioning Ethernet support, tweaks for low-resolution desktop environments, and other miscellaneous fixes. Wherever possible, these changes are incorporated using custom .deb packages rather than spewing assorted files all over post-install.

Pre-installation

Follow the instructions on the eeeXubuntu Installation page of the Wiki to create a bootable CD or, preferably for the eeePC, a bootable USB Pen Drive containing the eeeXubuntu Live CD.

It is worthwhile removing or reducing in size any partitions from your SD card before we carry on to make room for the ext3 and swap partitions that we will create during the installation process.

Ok, so you have installed a version of eeeXubuntu, but there is a newer version available, but you don't want to format and start over from the beginning? Then this page is for you!

No known fix.

OK, this was VERY easy!
(Update by “another user” : I have used this method and it works for me, too)

First, I started with a 4GB Surf 701, with 2GB ram, with a standard installation of Eeexubuntu 7.10 r3, installed from CD-ROM (back in early January, soon after its release), following the wiki instructions located here: eeeXubuntu.
