Basic Linux Commands

Introduction

In Linux operating systems there is more incentive to learn and use the command line than in Windows, especially as Microsoft has relegated almost all functions to the GUI. For some tasks it may be more efficient to use the command-line interface (CLI), and for Linux purists and experts, that is often the preferred method. In any case, it is to your advantage to familiarize yourself with the CLI.

First Charge

When you first take your EeePC out of the box, you have two options. First plug in the unit to mains/wall socket.

	* The orange charging light will come on and you can let it charge fully for about two hours.
	* You can power on the unit and use it while it is charging. It will take MUCH longer to fully charge.

Large windows can sometimes go off-screen. To move a hidden part of the window into view, click and drag with the left mouse button on any part of the window whilst holding down the ALT key.

UBUNTU

Unfortunately a default 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon install on the eee does not allow the window to be dragged above the top of the screen even when holding the ALT key so this solution is incomplete for deep windows which cannot be resized. Several alternative solutions are discussed in the forum here -

How Linux software installation works

How Linux software installation works

Most Linuxes use packages to install files. These are effectively bundles of files in one large archive file. Different flavours of Linux have different packages, with different extensions- the EEE's default distribution, Xandros, uses the same package format as its parent distribution, Debian. As a result, these packages have the file extension .deb which is why people call them 'deb files'.
