Adding and Using the GIMP.

This is a guide to install The GIMP on your EeePc

The Gimp is the Open Source image manipulation tool. You can use it to do virtually any kind of post-processing you want, except RAW file manipulation - for that you'll need other tools (see Photographer's HOWTO).

You'll need to add repositories to your Xandros list - see and follow the instructions in Adding Additional Software Repositories.

Open a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T, or select it from your Start menu or Launcher), and enter the following command(s):

apt-get update (if you haven't done it yet)
 apt-get install gimp

NOTE 1: You may get a Permission Denied response to these commands, in which case you will need to preceed the commands with sudo. NOTE 2: The install package is not currently available at the default location.

You'll need to play around with resizing the dialog boxes and quitting normally to get them to fit on the Eee screen - try removing stuff from the default ones - but you can get them all on the screen.

The Gimp works nicely on the Eee.

There is an additional package called Gimpshop that can also be added, which alters the Gimp menu structure to be more similar to that used in Photoshop. Gimpshop doesn't make Gimp exactly like Photoshop – it will still handle filters in its own way, and generally the commands will still function like Gimp commands and not like Photoshop commands. However, it may make Gimp slightly easier to use for those to whom PS is old hat. To add Gimpshop, you must use an additional command called “wget” (web get – this basically downloads a file to the current directory from a URL), because Gimpshop is not currently mirrored in a repository.

 wget http://www.plasticbugs.com/blogimg/gimpshop_2.2.11-1_i386.deb
 sudo dpkg -i gimpshop_2.2.11-1_i386.deb

You may delete the .deb file after installation if you wish (it is not required for uninstallation). You do not need to do anything special after this; whenever you run Gimp it will now automatically use gimpshop menus.

Adding Easy Mode Icons

Follow the instructions in how to customize easy mode and use the following images which go nicely with the stock theme in easy mode.
