Gparted LiveCD from USB stick

Here are some instructions 1) for setting up a USB flash drive to run Gparted Live from a computer running Windows XP.

  1. Download the latest Gparted Live CD ISO file from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828.
  2. Download the latest syslinux.exe file from http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/syslinux/. The executable file can be found in the win32 directory of the zip archive.
  3. Mount the ISO with your favorite virtual drive software. I use Daemon Tools which can be found at http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5.
  4. Copy the following files to the root of your USB flash drive:
    gparted.dat
    boot/gparted
    boot/gparted.igz
    syslinux/boot.img
    syslinux/options.msg
    syslinux/slash.lss
    syslinux/syslinux.cfg
  5. Open a command prompt and run syslinux.exe -ma X: (where X: is the drive letter of the USB flash drive).
  6. Verify that the system file ldlinux.sys was created at the root of the USB flash drive (You may need to change the Windows Explorer view options to show 'hidden files and folders' and 'protected operating system files' in order to see the file).
  7. Now your USB Flash Drive should be ready to boot from and run Gparted Live.
