As of the release of 701 on the swedish market the following text is deprecated. | < > signs work fine with standard symbols file. - 2008-06-07
When using the swedish xkb layout in X you will see that | and >< dont even exist, there is no way to get them on the screen.
Abergman found a solution for this by changing the file /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/se with the file from: http://privat.larsemil.se/se
Note: Remember that this is made for eeeXubuntu and that the paths can be slightly different on other distros (e.g. /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/se on the default Xandros distro).
Note2: At least with the Finnish layout |, < and > characters can be made with combinations of Control, Shift, Fn and Z keys.
Note3: To elaborate on above, with US kbd (Taiwanese eee) < is Fn-Z, > is Shift Fn-Z and | is Right Alt-Fn-Z That is without using the tweaked se symbols file
