====== How To: emulate high resolutions on the eee's on board display with windows XP. ====== Note From Author: This page and [[how_to_enable_1024x768_and_increase_dpi]] need to be merged. =====Note on Trojan Discussion===== Some people have detected a Trojan using AVG anti virus. Other software has not detected this Trojan. Please read discussion in this thread for more details . [[http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=127157#p127157]] kkjj made his source code available for inspection here. [[http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=144822#p144822]] ===== Why scaling is necessary ===== Some software is only capable of running at higher resolutions than the eee's 7" LCD supports. This is especially true of games though it also includes software that contains large non resizeable windows. ===== How scaling works ===== Scaling forces the eee to render the screen at a higher resolution, say 800x600, and then squishes the image down to 800x480 to fit on the eee's internal display. ===== Problems and limitations ===== This results in some distortion of the image and some degradation of image quality. The degradation in image quality is most noticeable in text though users have reported being satisfied with the appearance of text at 800x600. In exchange you can now run software that can only be run at higher resolutions. Turning ClearType off will improve appearance. Current solution only supports 800x600 and 1024x768. It is possible further support will be added later. ===== How to add this feature ===== ==== Before you Begin ==== You will need to install Windows XP on your eee to attempt this modification. There are many options for doing this. Please see the main wiki page for instructions on how to install alternate OS on the eee. ==== Step 1: download files ==== - you will need either the video driver for the R2H or the modified Intel or Asus drivers from LazerTag * http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?pid=108023#p108023 - you will need the kkjj's EEEPC_Utility. * http://140.126.130.41/~kkjj/2008/EEEPC_Utility12.zip ==== Step 2: Read any included "Readme" files ==== * Read any files containing readable text that might be supplied with drivers or software ==== Step 3: Install driver ==== - uninstall old display driver. - Install modified driver using either kkjj's or LazerTag's - In advanced display properties uncheck "hide unsupported resolutions" ==== Step 4: Run kkjj's program ==== - Set output to Notebook only. - run the EEEPC_Utility program and follow directions to pick resolution. ==== Step 5: Make improvements to this article ==== * add screen shots of steps * add better directions * fix typos ===== Recommended settings ===== * Turn ClearType off. * If in 1024x768 font, a DPI of 144 looks much nicer.
